On Wednesday, a rather alarming notification appeared on certain iPhone users’ smartphones. According to TechCrunch, Apple notified people in 92 countries that they might have been the victim of mercenary malware attacks. “Apple detected that you are being targeted by a mercenary spyware attack that is trying to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID -xxx-,” the notification continued.
Apple continued to provide further details regarding the issue in their alert. It’s possible that this attack is directed especially at you due to your identity or occupation. Apple has high confidence in this warning; please take it carefully, even though it’s never possible to attain 100% certainty when detecting such threats,” the statement stated. Apple stated that it was concerned that more information would enable attackers to evade detection in the future, so it was unable to disclose what caused the notification. The organization pinpoints attacks using internal data and investigations.
This instance is hardly the first time Apple has had to send this sort of notification. Since 2021, individuals in over 150 countries have received similar messages, including a warning to some journalists and politicians in India last October. However, it’s unclear which countries individuals received alerts in this time around.
