The team at Bluesky has determined that it is now appropriate to include world leaders in its ranks, after the company’s recent public opening and introduction of more moderating choices. On Friday, the official Bluesky account posted a message informing users that “we lifted our ‘no heads of state’ policy.” The policy has been in effect for the past year while Bluesky has navigated the challenges of being a nascent social network.
From the time of its introduction in February 2023 until February of this year, Bluesky was an invite-only site; it eventually removed the waitlist. In May of last year, Bluesky had stated that it was not yet ready for heads of state to sign up. Users were even urged to notify the company’s support team “before you invite prominent figures.” Since then, it has amassed more than 5 million users—roughly a million of them just the day after invite codes were no longer needed.
