Despite receiving positive test scores, Dragon’s Dogma 2 was heavily panned by the gaming community due to its several microtransactions and frequent performance issues. Players must pay for features that are typically included in a single-player game, such as character customisation and quick travel, if they lack the matching items.
Dragon’s Dogma 2’s multiple microtransactions have already been acknowledged by Capcom, who has also promised to make at least one modification in the newly released roadmap that will hopefully do away with the necessity for in-game payments for character customization going forward. Naturally, there’s also the issue of how future publishers will handle microtransactions in single-player video games. A lot of people will probably be focusing on CD Projekt Red in particular, as the publisher is working on two highly anticipated games: Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4.
In an interview with Stockwatch CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz was asked whether there will be microtransactions in future games. The answer:
“Although we don’t see a place for microtransactions in single-player games, we don’t rule out using them for multiplayer projects in the future.”
In multiplayer games, where in-game purchases have long been established, CD Projekt does not rule out their use. In single-player games, however, Nielubowicz sees no room for microtransactions, which should mean that in The Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2 and other future single-player games from the publisher, all basic functions will be usable without having to spend money on them.
Is CD Projekt working on multiplayer games?
There is currently no indication that CD Projekt is planning a multiplayer project. The question of which multiplayer games the publisher could use microtransactions in therefore remains open. However, it cannot be ruled out that Projekt Hadar, which CD Projekt has been working on since 2021, could be a multiplayer title. All we know so far is that it will be a completely new brand with fundamental differences to Cyberpunk and The Witcher.
