The Android Google Phone app will soon have a new function called “Lookup.” Its primary goal, as observed in beta version 127.0.620688474, is to assist you in identifying unknown calls. However, Truecaller, a phonebook app with an integrated Caller ID search feature, cannot be replaced by it.
For those who are curious, Truecaller’s Caller ID feature can display the name, location, and other pertinent details of the incoming caller. Naturally, all of this incoming data must be stored in Truecaller’s database, which it gathers via its community, social media accounts, and opted-in users. In contrast, the Google Phone app’s “Lookup” function functions in a different way.
It doesn’t show you any info about the incoming call before you receive it. Instead, it lets you do a quick search after the call with apps that can handle web searches. Yes, this is something that you can manually do by copying and pasting the number into a browser. So, the new feature of the Google phone app on Android is basically saving you from a few steps.
On that note, you are less likely to get information on personal phone numbers on Google. This means the “Lookup” feature is mainly there to help identify businesses that have their contact details indexed on the search engine. So, Android apps like Truecaller won’t be affected by this new feature.
As for when Google will launch the feature on the stable version of its Phone app, it’s apparently been available in Japan since last month, and it could see a global rollout next month.
